Behind the pen

A born and raised Michigan resident, I’ve always been the person who shows up to a party with fifteen spare pencils and a notebook. Words and all of their complexities have been a concrete pillar of my life. At Northern Michigan University, I gained my foundation as a journalist and a copy editor for the student paper The North Wind. With such a small staff, the pressure of a printer deadline and the overall impression of the paper landed on me as a part of a two person copyedit team. Finishing the job every week, meant many late nights turned into early mornings. Piles of proofs were pinned up on a corkboard and combed over continuously . Some call print a lost art, but to me, it’s developing into something new. After graduating with my writing degree in 2020, along with quarantine stress baking, McDonough Editorial started to take form. Many in my close circle needed someone to proofread projects, memos, reports and a number of different things. It truly became an unofficial editing internship. At the same time, I recognized the direction that the copyediting industry was moving with the influence of technology. Using trusted resources, I worked toward certification in the practice of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

There is a special kind of victory in the writer world that comes from finding the right arrangement of a sentence. As an editor, I wish that for all of my collaborations. It takes a team to make sure that messages don’t get lost in a space that is flooded with all kinds of thoughts . The power of your words deserve a launch using all of their potential.
