It’s not every day that you’re tossing out a lawn mower. Maybe you’re finally upgrading to an electric mower or tired of constantly repairing a push mower. Either way, you’re stuck with this machine in your garage that’s taking up space. How exactly do you throw out an old lawn mower?

Unity in words and actions: NMU celebrates MLK Day

January 2020

Through snow, slush, ice and sand—the cold crisp air didn’t discourage over 20 students, faculty and community members from marching for equity through the Academic Mall on Monday. 

The march kicked off a full day of events honoring the legacy and work of civil rights icon Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

State grant funds Anishinaabe language project

October 2019

A recent grant from Michigan’s Native American Heritage Fund (NAHF) gave NMU’s Center for Native American Studies (CNAS) almost $135,000 to help build a variety of different programs of study.

Significant Other brings out the honesty in love

February 2020

While everyone prepares for Valentine’s Day, be it with another person or curled up on the couch with a good book and a drink, the Forest Roberts Theatre (FRT) opens their production of “Significant Other” on Feb. 13 at the James A. Panowski Black Box Theatre. This play speaks to the difficulty of finding love while also celebrating the different kinds of relationships in life.

GLOBAL STRIKE

September 2019

Over 150 students, professors and community members marched around NMU’s campus on Friday, Sept. 20, in support of the growing initiative to combat climate change and was one of thousands of similar protests happening all over the world.

Can someone just look me in the eye?

Kids dream about what they want to be, and more often than not, it’s those dreams that set the path for the rest of their lives. But in those innocent years, it all seems easy as if things will just happen and one day you’ll finally be an astronaut or write the world’s best song. The dream that keeps everything going and moving forward.

Academic Senate chips away grad barriers by eliminating minors

November 2019

After a recent Academic Senate meeting, minors will no longer be automatically required for all NMU students; however, individual departments can still implement them into their programs.

The lost boys of South Sudan

September 2018

When troops from the Northern Arab government opened fire and destroyed everything in their path, it forced 12-year-old John Dau to run from his village of Duk Payuel in South Sudan. Dau’s home was destroyed, but that was just the beginning of the Second Sudanese Civil War.
